The Proving Ground 2.0 – week 6

  The Lordship Test

Pastor Phillip O’Reilly

What is Lordship? What is the Lordship test about? It’s simple, really. The Lordship test is about accepting God’s sovereignty. His rightness. His rule over all. It’s about letting God be our Lord.

The Lordship test is, like all the other tests, not something that you encounter only once. Instead, the Lordship test requires a daily surrender to God’s will and His plans.  It requires us to constantly be giving up of our own desires to lean in to God’s desires for us. We have to focus first on God’s Word – His promises, His direction, His grace, His perseverance, His reign – before we focus on our own happiness. Afterall, if we are leaned in and tuned in to God’s will, our joy will flow from Him and Him alone.

Through all the tests, all the valleys and hilltops, all the tribulations and triumphs, God calls us to relinquish our selfish desires and to wholly submit to His desires for us. The sooner we are able to abandon our own will, the more quickly we can be filled with the kind of Joy that does not waiver or cease. The more completely we can give God our full trust, the more all-encompassing Peace we will be able to know.

The Lordship test is all about knowing that God is big and we are not. It is about recognizing that He knows more than we do and sees more than we do. It is about putting His will above all else.

Passing the Lordship test will make all the other tests easier to navigate. Being able to fully rely and put all our trust in God makes the enemy scatter from us during other tests. Not only does God promise protection and safety, He goes even further and promises blessing. Blessing on blessing on blessing.

All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.” [Deuteronomy 28:1-8]

So, passing the Lordship test is simple. It does not require any secret code or any complicated doctrine. It only requires surrender. And recognition that God is bigger than tests.
