Speed Up and Slow Down

Pastor Phillip O’Reilly

Things don’t just grow because we want them to. Wishing for a fir tree but then taking no work in planting, watering, sowing, and nurturing wouldn’t make sense. It’s the same way for growing in what God has in store for us.

In order to reap the harvest from God’s promises, we have to allow His Word to be planted, nurtured, and then – only then – will it grow.

God’s blessing isn’t in merely reading or studying the Word. The blessing is not in the knowing or the memorizing. The blessing is in the doing. Only in doing what the Word asks, we are able to be blessed beyond our wildest dreams.

Speed up listening. Listen with a view to understand and to implement. We must listen with intention. God speaks to us all the time, and if we are not mindful in how we listen to the world around us, we might miss something. We have to pay attention to how we pay attention.

Slow down the tongue. We are often so quick to speak that we say things we don’t mean. We react with meanness. We judge and we condemn. Instead, we need to become slow to speak. Words matter, so we must use them wisely. “Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.┬áConsider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark” [James 3:5].

Slow down anger. Anger has never helped. It’s one of those feelings that doesn’t serve much of a purpose, other than to pacify our flesh. Anger ruins relationship, damages hearts, and puts up walls. Instead of reacting in anger, we have to learn how to slow down, calm down, and communicate with Love like our Father does for us. “Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city” [Proverbs 16:32].

God wants to bless us. He wants to throw open the windows of Heaven and let it rain on us. But – we have to be postured to receive His Word. We have to have a heart stance of openness, not clouded by our own ideas or judgements or shoulds. God’s plan is so much better than we can imagine, and all we have to do is be ready to be blessed.
