The Heart God Seeks

Pastor Phillip O’Reilly

God is looking for hearts that want Him. He’s looking for hearts that are postured to love Him, and, even further, hearts that are postured to be loved by Him.

The good news is that there are no rules here. He’s not looking for hearts that are without blame or without blemish. If that were the case, we would all be disqualified. God is just looking for hearts that are open.

He looks for broken hearts. Hearts that are humble and hungry. Hearts that are repentant. When our hearts break and thirst, we are able to recognize and desire the true restorative power of God’s all-encompassing Love.

“The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.” [Psalm 51:17]

He looks for meditative hearts. Teachable ones and desperate ones. He seeks the hearts that think, that discern, that have a deep want to be made new. Because only then can He restore and bring freedom.

“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” [Matthew 5:3]

He looks for hearts that worship. In spirit in truth. On mountain tops and in valleys. In the fire and on dry land. Because He is bigger than the mountains and more consuming that any fire. And hearts that worship in that are hearts that are turned towards Him.

“But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.” [John 4:23]
