Walk in the Spirit
Pastor Phillip O’Reilly
“It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom.” [Galatians 5:13]
The thing is, when we choose to be a believer, when we choose to follow Jesus, we choose to walk with His Spirit.
Walking implies that the Spirit is moving. Walking implies that the Spirit has somewhere to go. And when we choose to walk with the Spirit, we are going. We are moving. We are happening.
So often we decide that we aren’t going to choose between flesh and spirit. We think we will just stay still, right in the middle of things. But, that’s impossible. Either we’re walking with the Spirit, or we aren’t. There is no middle of things here. And that is a hard idea to digest. Maybe it’s hard to digest because it flushes our darkness with Light. And there’s no hiding in the Light.
We hear the things we are tuned into. If we are tuned into jealousy, we will find jealousy. If we are tuned into greed, we will find greed. If we are tuned into anger, we will be angry. But, if we listen close, if we lean in, if we pray and believe, if we are tuned into God, He is what we will find. If we are paying attention, will find His grace and goodness and gentleness and love.
When we choose to walk in the Spirit, we must tune into Him. We must sit in the quiet, expectantly listening to the Spirit. We must shut out the noise of the flesh, of the world, of our own darkness, and we must invite the Spirit to come. To take our hand, and to lead us into Love.
